Historic Site of Kim Jeong-hui (Chusa)
The family house and tomb of Chusa Kim Jeong-hui, creator of the Chusa script and "Sehando".
This historic site covers the family house where the late-Joseon scholar and calligrapher Kim Jeong-hui (1786–1856), known as Chusa, was born and raised, together with his tomb. The house was built in the time of his great-grandfather Kim Han-sin, son-in-law of King Yeongjo, and its women's quarters, men's quarters and family shrine are well preserved. Kim Jeong-hui was a master of epigraphy and evidential scholarship and perfected his own original calligraphy, the "Chusa style".
"Sehando", which he painted in exile on Jeju Island, moved by a disciple's loyalty, is considered his masterpiece; a memorial hall and a white pine tree nearby are also worth seeing.
The Confucian Connection
"Sehando" takes its theme from the Analects: "Only when the year grows cold do we see that the pine and cypress are the last to fade." It celebrates unchanging loyalty, and Kim himself is the model of a scholar who cultivated both learning and art.
