Yeongi Hyanggyo (Confucian School)

The old Confucian school and shrine of historic Yeongi county.

Yeongi Hyanggyo was the Confucian school of Yeongi county in the Joseon dynasty — Yeongi being the area's name before Sejong City was created. Hyanggyo were state schools founded in every county, made up of a shrine hall for Confucius and other sages and a lecture hall where students studied. It keeps the history of the old county alive inside the new administrative city of Sejong.

The traditional Seokjeon rite for Confucius is said to still be held here in spring and autumn.

The Confucian Connection

It shows that the roots of old scholarly culture remain even in the new city of Sejong. The hyanggyo was where everyone in the county learned righteousness and propriety.
