Hongju Hyanggyo (Confucian School)
The Confucian school of Hongju, once a major county in western Chungnam.
Hongju Hyanggyo was the Confucian school of Hongju, the Joseon-era name for the area around today's Hongseong. As Hongju was the leading county of western Chungnam, its hyanggyo played a major role in local Confucian education. It has the standard layout of a hyanggyo, including a shrine hall for Confucius and other sages and a lecture hall where students studied.
Strolling the quiet courtyard, you can picture how the people of the old county kept learning alive.
The Confucian Connection
Hyanggyo were state schools where young people studied the Confucian classics and practised the rites. This is one of many such places of learning in Chungnam, the region of "Propriety".
