Oeam Folk Village

A 500-year-old scholars' village of stone-walled lanes, noble houses and thatched cottages.

Oeam Folk Village lies beneath Seolhwasan Mountain in Asan and has been home to the Yean Yi clan for generations. The village is said to take its name from the pen name of Yi Gan, a late-Joseon Neo-Confucian scholar. Along winding stone-walled lanes, tiled noble houses and thatched cottages sit side by side, preserving the look of an old Korean village.

It is designated a National Folklore Cultural Heritage, and because residents still live here you can see tradition as part of everyday life.

The Confucian Connection

A village where one clan has lived together observing the rites for centuries is itself a picture of a Confucian community. The men's quarters and shrines of the old houses offer a glimpse of propriety in a scholar's household.
