Cheongpung Cultural Heritage Complex

A lakeside village of heritage buildings rescued from a valley drowned by a dam.

Cheongpung Cultural Heritage Complex brings together heritage buildings from old Cheongpung county, which was submerged when the Chungju Dam was built. During construction in the 1980s, government buildings, a Confucian school, pavilions, old houses and stone monuments were moved up to this hill to recreate the old county town. Among them is Hanbyeongnu Pavilion, a Treasure of Korea, and many other structures stand overlooking Cheongpung Lake.

The scenery of lake and mountains makes it easy to understand the phrase "clear wind and bright moon" (cheongpung myeongwol).

The Confucian Connection

With Cheongpung's government office, Confucian school and pavilions gathered in one place, you can see at a glance how scholars governed, studied and rested in a county town. The course of ji (智, wisdom) — understanding through nature — begins here.
