Hoedeok Hyanggyo (Confucian School)

The Joseon-era public school and Confucian shrine of old Hoedeok county.

Hoedeok Hyanggyo was the hyanggyo (local Confucian school) of Hoedeok county in the Joseon dynasty, which covered today's Daedeok-gu in Daejeon. Hyanggyo were state schools set up in every county, combining a shrine for Confucius and other sages with halls where students studied. Hoedeok was home to scholarly families such as the Eunjin Song clan, making it the stage for the "Songchon" school of learning.

Traditional rites are still held here, showing the roots of local Confucian culture.

The Confucian Connection

It was the public centre of the scholarly culture of Hoedeok, the region that produced Song Jun-gil and Song Si-yeol. If seowon were private academies, the hyanggyo was the place of learning for the whole county.
