Hwayang Seowon (Confucian Academy)

The academy honouring Song Si-yeol, beside the nine-bend valley he named — Hwayang Gugok.

Hwayang Seowon is an academy in Goesan's Hwayang Valley, founded after Song Si-yeol's death to honour him. In his later years Song lived and studied in this valley, naming nine outstanding bends of the stream "Hwayang Gugok" (Nine Bends of Hwayang). Once a highly influential academy, it was demolished under Heungseon Daewongun's closure of seowon and has since been restored.

Walk along the clear stream and broad flat rocks to feel the nature that scholars loved.

The Confucian Connection

The "gugok culture" of naming each bend of a valley was a scholar's way of studying — walking through nature step by step as one advanced in learning. This is where Song Si-yeol's story continues from Daejeon into Chungbuk.
