Sudang Historic House
The home of Sudang Yi Nam-gyu, a scholar who gave his life for his country.
Sudang Historic House has been home for generations to the family of Yi Nam-gyu (1855–1907), known as Sudang, a scholar-official of the late Joseon dynasty. When the country was in peril, Yi spoke out to the throne and supported the Righteous Armies, and in 1907 he was killed by Japanese troops together with his son. Set at the foot of a hill with women's quarters, men's quarters and a shrine, the house shows the typical layout of a scholar's home.
It is designated a National Folklore Cultural Heritage, and the family's story of resistance for independence is passed down here as well.
The Confucian Connection
This house preserves a life that saw it as a scholar's duty to act on what he had learned and to choose righteousness when the nation was in trouble.
