Uirimji Reservoir
An ancient reservoir dating back to the Samhan era, and a scenic spot beloved by scholars.
Uirimji is said to have been first built in the Samhan era, making it one of the oldest reservoirs in Korea. It has supplied water for farming for centuries, and with pine and willow trees around its banks it is designated a Scenic Site. Pavilions stand by the water where scholars have long come to write poetry and enjoy the scenery.
There is also a story that "Hoseo", the old name for the Chungcheong region, means "west of the lake" and refers to Uirimji.
The Confucian Connection
Here, caring for people's livelihoods and cultivating the mind in nature go together. Scholars travelled to scenery like this to understand the principles of things.
