Dongchundang Pavilion

"May it always be like spring" — the study pavilion of the scholar Song Jun-gil.

Dongchundang is a detached study pavilion built by the late-Joseon scholar Song Jun-gil (1606–1672), who took the building's name as his own pen name. "Dongchun" means "to be always like spring", expressing a warm and steady state of mind. Laid out simply with a wooden hall and an underfloor-heated room and almost no ornament, it shows the restraint of Joseon scholars' architecture and is designated a Treasure of Korea.

The surrounding area is now Dongchundang Park, with old family houses and a shrine, making it a pleasant walk in the middle of the city.

The Confucian Connection

Song Jun-gil studied under Kim Jang-saeng (honoured at Donam Seowon in Nonsan) and his son Kim Jip, and together with fellow disciple Song Si-yeol he was known as one of the "Two Songs". This is where a line of learning from Chungnam continued into Daejeon.
