Okhwa Gugok (Nine Bends of Okhwa)

A scholar's walk along nine bends of a crystal-clear stream.

Okhwa Gugok is the name for nine scenic bends along the upper Dalcheon stream around Miwon-myeon, Cheongju. Joseon scholars named each bend of beautiful valleys and wrote poems about them, cultivating their minds in nature. Okhwa Gugok is one of the places where this gugok culture survives, with rocks, woods and wide riverbanks unfolding one after another along the water.

Today there are a recreational forest and walking trails nearby, making it an easy place to explore on foot.

The Confucian Connection

Gugok were Joseon scholars' way of loving nature, modelled on the Neo-Confucian master Zhu Xi's "Nine Bends of Wuyi". It is a fitting place to end the course of wisdom, seeking truth in nature.
